INTRODUCTION:

This specialty of dentistry deals with the study of supporting structures of teeth, as well as diseases and conditions that affects them. The supporting tissues are known as the periodontium, which includes the gingiva (gums), alveolar bone, cementum, and the periodontal ligament. A periodontist is a dentist that specializes in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of periodontal disease.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

The student shall acquire the skill to: 

1. Perform dental scaling diagnostic tests of periodontal diseases. 

2. To use the instruments for periodontal therapy and maintenance of the same. 

The student shall develop attitude to;

1. Impart the preventive measures namely, the prevention of periodontal 

2. Diseases and prevention of the progress of the disease. 

3. Perform the treatment with full aseptic precautions. 

4. Shall develop an attitude to prevent iatrogenic diseases. 

5. To conserve the tooth to the maximum possible time by maintaining

7. To refer the patients who require specialist's care.

By the end of this course, the students must be able to: 

1. Understand the basic & advance concepts of X-rays techniques 

2. Identify all the parts of the dental x-ray unit including the control panel, the properties of the beam and how the beam generates energy. 

3. Illustrate the biological effects of radiation and how they influence clinical dental hygiene and radiology. 

4. Investigate the proper ways to limit radiation exposure to patient and operator and receive quality diagnostic images.

5. Explore the darkroom, processing radiographs and recognizing processing errors. 

6. Recognize basic information seen used in radiographic interpretation 

7. Uses of advanced techniques in dental radiography (such as chair-side digital x-rays)

INTRODUCTION:

 The placement of this subject is in 3rd year semester V of BS-DCP (Dental Hygiene). Community Dentistry is a specialty that deals with the population as a whole, both sick and healthy. Thus it is important to know both the occurrence and prevalence of oral health and diseased status in a population. This course will be taught mainly by the Department of Community Dentistry in third year, that have been divided into two parts, where lectures and practical work will be covered over a period of 4 months for each of the two courses in the semester-V and later portion will be covered in semester-VI.

By the end of the course the students of dental hygiene will be able to: 

1. Define and understand dental public health and underlying range of factors that determine people‘s health. 

2. Describe epidemics of oral diseases that will contribute to the understanding and prevention of oral health problems; and primary oral health care provision.
